I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

A lot of appliances and fixtures have service valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you cannot find a valve, or that does not stop the leak, then turn off the mains water tap to stop all the water to your property.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant things from the area, and wipe up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
