I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have service valves that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have a tap below or beside the cistern. If you can’t locate a tap, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains water isolating valve to stop all water to the property.

While you are waiting, remove any important items close to the leak, and clean up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
