I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve or at the mains tap outside. If you cannot locate the main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

While you are waiting, remove any significant things close to the leak, and mop up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves also.
